Exhaust systems with valves, or valve-controlled exhaust systems, are becoming increasingly popular.

These are exhaust systems with integrated valves that can be opened and closed by a valve control.

There are various types of a valve-controlled exhaust system. Some work with pressure, some with vacuum, and others with an electric motor.

Purpose of a Valve-Controlled Exhaust System

A valve-controlled exhaust system and the valve control serve, among other things, to influence the sound of the car.

With the valve open, the sound of the vehicle can escape unhindered, providing the best opportunity to experience unfiltered sound.

However, the valve control also allows for closing the valve, reducing the sound and potentially transforming a roaring and popping car into one that sounds quite civilized.

In addition to sound, depending on the installation location, a valve can also mean a gain or loss of power.

In general, the later the valves are integrated into the exhaust system, the less impact they have on performance.

Thus, valve controls integrated into the rear silencer only affect the sound and serve to optimize the sound.

Legal Restrictions on a Valve-Controlled Exhaust System

Valve-controlled exhaust systems have strict regulations. For approval for road use, a prescribed noise level must not be exceeded.

In the EU, only valve-controlled exhaust systems with valves that cannot be opened or closed by a switch inside the vehicle are approved. The opening and closing of the valves are controlled by the vehicle's onboard computer.
